• School of Science Celebrates Student Innovation at Inaugural SURF Poster Fair

    18 Sep 2025

On September 12th, the School of Science successfully launched its first Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Poster Fair, transforming the Science Building into a dynamic hub of innovation and scholarly exchange. The inaugural event featured an impressive 66 high-quality research projects presented by over 200 undergraduate students from across the university, fostering a culture of discovery and academic excellence.

After rigorous scientific review, 13 projects received Excellent Project Awards, with 2 top student presenters earning the distinguished School Excellence Award.

Dr. Chun Chan of the Department of Biosciences and Bioinformatics, who led the organization of the fair, emphasized its significance. "The SURF Poster Fair brings together a group of exceptionally talented students who were selected through a highly competitive process for the originality and potential impact of their research," he said. "This event is a vital platform that not only highlights their diligent work over the summer but also builds the essential confidence needed to present research and engage critically with feedback."

The projects covered a diverse range of cutting-edge interdisciplinary research topics, from computational biology and chemistry to health and environmental science. Students demonstrated profound scientific thinking and a clear command of their subjects, showcasing both their technical skills and growing intellectual enthusiasm for pushing the boundaries of knowledge.

Professor John Moraros, the Dean of the School of Science, provided an inspiring perspective on the event's impact: “The scientific creativity and dedication on display at our first SURF Fair is a powerful testament to the vibrant research culture our undergraduate students are helping us build within our School. Our students represent the future of scientific inquiry, and this experience in articulating their ideas within a scholarly forum is invaluable. It is initiatives like SURF that ignite lasting passion and pave the way for their future success as the next generation of innovators and leaders.”

The fair marks a major step in the School of Science's and XJTLY’s commitment to providing hands-on, transformative research experiences that prepare students for academic and professional excellence.
