On October 17, the Department of International Studies hosted a roundtable titled "Epistemes of the Global South.” The discussion examined one of the most dynamic and transformative forces in contemporary international relations: the voices and perspectives of the Global South.

Organized by Dr. Debora Malito and Visiting Professor You Ji of the Department of International Studies, the event featured distinguished panelists including Professor Wang Chuanxing and Professor Chih-yu Shih from Tongji University, along with Dr. Xueying Zhang from Fudan University.

In his opening address, Department Head Dr. Francesco Macheda highlighted how the emergence of the Global South represents a fundamental shift toward a multipolar world order that champions more equitable globalization while challenging unilateral hegemony and aggressive military alliances.

The discussion, chaired by Dr. Malito, explored the historical development and evolving conceptualizations of the 'Global South.' Participants analyzed the term's diverse meanings in contemporary discourse, emphasizing the need to move beyond geographical determinism and simplistic representations. Scholars examined the inherent challenges in defining the Global South, stressing the importance of understanding its conceptual fluidity and the complex web of contextual factors, representations, practices, and relationships that the term encompasses.

The roundtable was followed by a research lunch where Department of International Studies faculty and guest speakers explored potential avenues for collaboration between their institutions. Discussions focused on developing joint events, fostering research partnerships, and pursuing cross-publication opportunities.
